Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from everyone here at Medford Happenings. I waited to post the update around the Danish Pastry House event because this is a very christmas-y post! One of the keyboard players, Robert brought in his family and his daughter sang an amazing version of Jingle Bells. She was very talented, very much like her father.

The initial billing was for the Jonathan Fagan (pictured above with his partner Shayla and co-director of the Medford Jazz Festival) trio but it really was another open jam show. Nothing wrong with that at all. All the piano players at this night’s event were all students of Jonathan’s. Each one was outstanding but it has to be noted that the quality and musicianship were simply top shelf. There was a great crowd as it was standing room only this night! The co-owners Dirken and Tracy opened up the Danish Pastry House to live music. They also had a full staff for the night as Monica and Walter helped man the counter. Since we’re here, the Danish Pastry House have been big supporters to music in Medford. They actually sponsored the Medford Jazz Festival that took place this past Summer at the West Medford Community Center and they brought their outstanding food to this event. As this was the first night of this kind of event, given the number in attendance, the expectation here is to host many more such events!

Musicians brought their sheet music, this gentleman above brought the hard copy with him as some of the others brought their tablets along with their copies of The Real Book. Whether it was jazz standards or christmas songs this was simply a fun night. Good food, good music and of course good friends. I look forward to the next event. Also apologies for the picture quality, for whatever reason, I struggled with the shutter speed and lost. Either way this was a good place to see an event and a great way to spend a Friday night!
