• The ceremony to introduce Max will be at city hall tonight beginning at 6pm. From the city website:

Medford poet, songwriter, and teacher Max Heinegg to take over position from Vijaya Sundaram on July 1

Installation Ceremony to be held on July 30 at 6 p.m. at City Hall

(MEDFORD) — The City of Medford, in partnership with the Medford Arts Council, has named its next Poet Laureate, Mayor Breanna Lungo-Koehn announced. Max Heinegg will become the City’s third Poet Laureate, taking over from Vijaya Sundaram, whose two-year term ends on June 30. The City will be holding an installation ceremony on July 30 at 6 p.m. in the Alden Memorial Chambers.

“We are thrilled to announce Max Heinegg as Medford’s Poet Laureate for the next two years,” said Mayor Lungo-Koehn. “His experience in our community, especially our schools, coupled with his dedication to his craft made him an ideal candidate to build upon Vijaya Sundaram and Terry Carter’s work.”

Max is a local poet, musician, and teacher living in West Medford and has taught in the Medford Public School system since 1998. Since he began writing poetry and songs in high school, he has published almost 300 poems and recorded 10 albums of original music and lyrics. He is the author of three poetry collections: Good Harbor, Going There, and Keepers of the House.

“I’m excited to be the next Poet Laureate and continue sharing my passion for poetry and other art forms with our community,” said Heinegg. “Thank you to Mayor Lungo-Koehn and the Arts Council for entrusting me with this opportunity, and to Vijaya and Terry for building the foundation of this position.”

    About the Poet Laureate Position

The City of Medford Poet Laureate, acting as the official City poet, will highlight poets and poetry, and literature, particularly working with community members who may traditionally have less access to poetry. Working with the City Administration and the Medford Arts Council, the Poet Laureate will strive to increase access to senior citizens, youth, and non-English speakers across various platforms. The Medford Poet Laureate will serve a two-year term and will receive a $2,000 stipend each year.

  • Today is the last day for prospective candidates to submit their nomination papers for certification. There are, at last count, 19 people running for the Medford City Council this year. When that list is finalized, we’ll post the names of the candidates. Note that you should be able to see all interviews via our youtube page – Medford Happenings or they are posted here as they become available.

IMPORTANT: As the field is so large this year, there is a chance that a primary will be called by the current city councilors. If the sitting councilors decide to put this in motion, this would narrow the field down to 14 for the final elections in November 4, 2025. The only potential hurdle would be whether or not the city wants to spend $75,000 for this primary.

The PDF of the election calendar is below.

Other election resources, please check out a real news site – GOTTA KNOW MEDFORD. If you have not subscribed to their newsletter please consider doing so, their work is important to the city of Medford!

We had the great pleasure of having all three women on our show a little while back, the video is posted below. Enjoy!

  • CALL FOR ART:

The goal of the show is to showcase artists of all ages (and levels) across the City of Medford, and/or works about the city in general.

The reception will coincide with our campaign kickoff on September 12, 2025, at the American Legion from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m. Accepted pieces are welcome to be put on display in the space as folks gather for the kickoff!

There is no entry fee for this virtual gallery.

Atleast one work will be accepted from each artist, as long as it meets the below criteria. Up to three pieces may be submitted.

Works must be Safe for Work (SFW) and be created by an artist from Medford, an artist currently residing/working in Medford, or about Medford in some way. Artists must not have used Generative AI to develop the works.

If you plan on having your work featured at the reception/campaign kickoff, please note the max is 2’x2′. If you work large, and want the opportunity to still make that piece able to be displayed, scaled down prints (or documentation of 3D work) are okay to bring on it’s behalf.

Please note works should be ready to be displayed as is. We are not able to hang work on the walls, so it will be placed on tables in the round.

  • Nicole Branley was our guest two weeks ago. She came on the show to discuss issues for the upcoming year. Nicole also discusses the importance of being able to work cohesively with not only the board but she states the importance of getting residents involved and engaged. Please see the video in full below. We will be providing podcasts of these episodes shortly. Very much more to come.

  • Last night was the opening night for the play “Much Ado About Nothing”. This was put on by the folks at the Mystic Players Revival. After a long hiatus, Margaret Petrella took up the torch to gather a new group of actors. After months of hard work, the players realized the payoff with last nights performance. This free event was very well attended.

What makes this production of Shakespeare’s play special was the hours of work, coordination and the dedication that goes into putting into a performance of this stature. Nobody got paid for this performance, although the value to the residents of Medford is immeasurable. There was a demand for plays, whether its free or not. There was well over 100 people who showed up last night. What a night it was, the weather could not have been more perfect, the stars clearly aligned for this event.

This post will be updated again later this evening but it must be noted one of the most impressive feats of the night belonged to the stage manager (on the right with the book). The play went off like clock work, everyone knew where they needed to be, the props on stage were not out of place. Without this coordination, events like this will fall apart and quickly. There was never that fear. As of 9:30am this morning, tonight’s show is still scheduled as the forecast for rain will end roughly at 4:30. A blanket may not be enough, if you can bring your folding chairs that would be your best bet. This play was a rousing success and I cannot wait for their future productions.

  • From Page’s facebook page:

I’m honored to receive the endorsement of the MWPC PAC and proud to stand alongside so many women working toward equity, access, and representation in our Commonwealth.

Only 36% of city councilors in Massachusetts are women—and that number needs to grow. I’m running to help change that, while staying rooted in the values that guide everything I do: empathy, inclusion, transparency, and community care.

As a small business owner, a Medford Public School mom, and someone who shows up every day for my neighbors—I’m ready to bring a new kind of leadership to City Hall.

“The MWPC PAC is proud to endorse Page Buldini for Medford City Councilor At-Large. Buldini is closely engaged with the Medford community as a small business owner and mom of Medford Public School children. She has demonstrated effective leadership skills during her time serving on the Board of Directors and Communications Committee for the Medford Chamber of Commerce. If elected, Buldini will work to invest in public safety, school resources, and make Medford a place where all residents feel welcome. Buldini’s vision lifts up Medford and every corner of our state.”

  • This was provided by Nick Giurleo running for Medford City Council.

The City of Medford and Mayor are being sued for violating the civil rights of Department of Public Works employees?

    The federal lawsuit alleges this:

“On December 9, 2024 . . . employees of the Medford Department of Public Works (DPW), were abruptly pulled off their jobs, ordered to the DPW garage, and, under threat of termination, subjected to invasive and unsanitary drug and alcohol testing. The testing, conducted in a van, with its door left open, exposed [the DPW employees] to public view while a technician failed to follow basic hygiene protocols, such as changing gloves between handling breathalyzer tubes, urine samples, and other materials. No employee tested positive, and there was never any good faith reason to believe they would . . . . Far from a legitimate workplace safety measure, the tests were a retaliatory volley in an ongoing feud with [the DPW employees] and their union. Defendants . . . ordered the testing in bad faith to punish [the DPW employees] for their protected activities, including opposing the Mayor’s administration, participating in court cases against the City, engaging in public protests and rallies, and for the suggestion that the Mayor engages in political favoritism.”

Our DPW workers and all other city employees provide invaluable services to our city. Their constitutional rights must be protected. Nick will commit to ensuring this is so when he is elected.

You, the residents, are paying for this lawsuit and others. The current City Council consists of no attorneys and our newly-hired city solicitor has thus far been an invisible presence in ensuring Medford is in compliance with the law. When Nick is elected, he will use his expertise as an attorney to investigate instances when the city is not in compliance with the law. He will speak out when he believes the city is engaging in illegal conduct and do everything he can to provide redress before lawsuits are filed. His priorities are accountability and your wallet.

The complaint is below. Read Pages 4-13 for more details on what led to this lawsuit. Email info@nickgformedford.com if you would like a PDF.

  • Melanie (center) attending a local event around zoning with West Medford residents a few weeks ago.

Melanie was a guest on Dan Rea’s radio show on WBZ, the excerpt below is from Melanie’s facebook page.

    🎙️🎙️🎙️🎙️Speaking Out for Medford Residents!🎙️🎙️🎙️🎙️

Last night, I joined Dan Rea on his Nightside show to talk about Medford’s zoning issues—especially the rushed and misguided approach to the Salem Street rezoning.

As a longtime resident and candidate for City Council, I believe we need thoughtful, transparent planning that includes real input from the people who call Medford home.

The zoning changes are being pushed forward without fully evaluating the impact on our neighborhoods, infrastructure, and quality of life.

Our focus should be on revitalizing our squares and commercial areas, NOT disrupting the neighborhoods that make Medford such a special place to live.
