• Its been a super busy couple of weeks as we head to the end of the year. Lots of places to see and to post. In the new year we’ll have redesigned our site and finally get around to posting rss feeds for those who want to download our podcasts instead of watching the shows. Fwiw, there are still a handful of tickets available for Patti Smith who shows up at the Chevalier on Dec 17. NOTE: If you go to the box office, you can avoid those Ticketmaster charges! Be aware – the box office is open Friday & Saturday – 12pm to 6pm or 2 hours prior to any show.

I was heading to the book sale at the Medford Public library and on the way, I passed Palm Press Inc. As they have a lot of books, I went in out of curiosity. I was met by Ross the store/studio manager and had a great conversation with him about the store and what they offer. That write up will appear tomorrow. For now, know that there is a bookstore event for Saturday Dec 13 with Dust Collective ft. Amani Willett.

For more information about Amani, check out their site – https://www.dustcollective.net/store/p/invisible-sun-by-amani-willett

For more information about Palm Press visit their website – https://palmpress.studio/ or visit them right in Medford Square – 19 High St, Medford MA 02155 and are open Wednesday-Friday 10-6 and Saturday 11-4.

FRIDAY, December 12th, at 7pm in the Caron Theatre, Medford High School (489 Winthrop Street, Medford). This season’s program will be a celebration of the season, and will feature music from Handel’s Messiah, Barry Manilow, John Rutter, Glenn Miller, Andrea Bocelli, Alan Jackson, Peter Paul and Mary, and more.

The Medford Senior Center is graciously providing transportation for seniors to and from the concert, leaving from the Senior Center. Please call 781-396-6010 to sign up.

Admission is free (although donations toward the ongoing expenses of the Chorale are greatly appreciated).
Plus: there will be some great raffles!

For more information, please contact Betsy Pesce, Director at 617-335-8155 or at elizabethpesce@comcast.net or check out their website – https://medfordcommunitychorale.org/2025/10/25/friday-dec-12-2025-at-7-pm-at-medford-ma-high-school/

  • Deep Cuts changes everything you thought you knew about clubs, food, music and alcohol! I’ve been to Deep Cuts a couple of times over the Summer and I was heading over to the library book sale yesterday and figured I couldn’t buy books on an empty stomach so I went to Deep Cuts first for a sandwich and their outstanding ginger lemonade! As I do not drink, I can’t be much help in regards to the craft beer but they do offer a wide selection of not only beers but the hard stuff as well. No this place is much more than just a bar/club/restaurant. I cannot underscore the number of food offerings this place has. Their menu is here – https://www.deepcuts.rocks/menu

Lets kick things off with the place itself. The owner describes this as a place that “is the go-to spot for live music, great sandwiches, and craft beer. Add in pinball and vinyl records, and you’ve got a place where people come together for good times and memorable experiences. It’s more than just a venue—it’s a community hub for those who appreciate quality music and great food.”

This is not your father’s bar. Its family friendly, which I can attest to because of the folks who brought their whole family in for an afternoon meal. Its a totally safe space where people are respectful of each other and there is a lot of things to do to keep the kids engaged while the parents get to talk. Fwiw, the kids were well behaved and that’s rare these days. There is everything from board games to pinball machines across the hall from the main dining area. Everything from the wall hangings to the posters, this whole place is inviting and has something for everyone.

Ok now for the reason we’re here, the food! Deep Cuts will post their sandwiches of the day. However, looking at the menu – https://www.deepcuts.rocks/menu, I had already decided what I was going to get when I sat at the bar. That sandwich was – The Catania – Ham, capicola, salami, provolone, lettuce, tomato, onions, banana peppers and hot mayo, the flavor and not the temperature. Of course all on a ciabatta roll. It was as good as it sounds. Paired with fries, this was the perfect meal on a snowy day! The ciabatta roll was super fresh, the meats were perfectly paired and the sandwich had the perfect amount of crunch to it. The best part is that it was not overstuffed so that when you bit into it, the ingredients would not spill out, the roll contained everything without making a mess. The banana peppers are a somewhat new item to me, I do not like really spicy food but those fears are unfounded, it was enough to add a counter balance to the sweeter elements of the sandwich. This sandwich had exceeded my expectations and I look forward to trying other sandwiches in the coming year.

While you’re out and about doing your Christmas shopping or just out in general and you need to take a knee, consider doing so at Deep Cuts. It is within walking distance of two parking lots, there is the one behind Colleen’s and of course the one along Clippership drive. Either one is within a 5 min walk. Let us know what your favorite sandwich was!

Also worth noting, Gotta Know Medford also had a great review of Deep Cuts as well, since you’re here check out their article – https://www.gottaknowmedford.com/20251205_buy-a-record-eat-a-sandwich-hear-a-band-at-boston-music-awards-nominated-medford-venue-deep-cuts/

Words and Music: Terry E. Carter and Renée Heywood
    Friday, December 8, 2023 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm
    Free

The West Medford Community Center’s final Words and Music program of the year will turn the tables on host Terry E. Carter, with WMCC board member Ilene Lerner interviewing Carter about his newly released sixth book of poetry, “Brown Skin and the Brilliant Sun: A Poet’s Opus.” That segment will be followed by a performance of songs of light and hope by West Medford native Dr. Renée Heywood. An educator, author and ordained pastor, she has recorded several gospel music albums. Seating is limited and masking is welcomed. The program also will be carried live on the Medford Community Media YouTube channel, and on MCM community access television (Ch. 9-Comcast, Ch. 47-Verizon).

The West Medford Community Center launched Words and Music in 2017. Usually presented on the first Friday of every month, the event starts off with a discussion on a valuable aspect of the community, normally moderated by Carter, followed by a performance by a local musician or musicians. For more information on this or other WMCC programs, visit the center’s website or call 781-483-3042.

Or visit Terry’s site where you can buy his books – https://brownskinnedpoet.net/books

  • Strolling through the neighborhood yesterday afternoon, it appears that after years of letting the Hegner building decay, it appears that at least someone is clearing the brush away from the building. Does this mean work is finally starting on this building? We’ll find out. Hopefully we find a home for the abandoned cop car and golf cart.

Unrelated we’ll be focusing on highlighting all the work that has been done to the various city parks. The folks at the CPA have done an amazing job and its worth highlighting this work. The city has gone to the trouble of updating these spaces and the residents should be aware that these places exist for them. We’re also working on having one of the folks from CPA – Community Preservation Committee on our show. For more information on what they do and what they provide, their website can be found here – https://www.medfordma.org/boards-commissions/community-preservation-committee We just need to get our act together but we’ll have that after the new year. In the mean time check out the images from the renovated McGillis Park complete with workout stations which is completely open to the public. A lot of folks may be unaware they can just go through the now unlocked gate and workout. Just in time to make those New Year’s resolutions without spending any money!

After the New Year, we will highlight the many benefits the Preservation Committee provides for the city. They have done a wonderful job improving our parks. The next profile will feature Carr Park, which now includes a skateboarding area, pickleball courts, and baseball diamonds for Little League games. At the far end, you’ll also find a combined Little League/softball field.

In addition, a new dog park has been created for both small and large dogs. It’s worth noting that these dog parks are far superior to those in neighboring cities, thanks to their thoughtful layout and the water stations provided for both dogs and owners.

If you haven’t visited McGillis Park, Hickey Field, or Carr Park, be sure to check them out. All three are located within a mile of each other, either on Fulton Street or just off Fulton.

  • Just a heads up, as you can see from the poster above, the sale at Medford Soap company is in full swing now. If you haven’t been to their site, you can find more information at medfordsoap.com Goodvibes also sells their soaps and of course there was the artisan’s fair this past month in Oct. Medford Happenings had the good luck to run into both Michelle and her son as they manned the booth at the fair.

I took a moment to purchase a wickless candle which is simply phenomenal. No smoke, no burning wax vapors, just a nice even evaporation of the candle. The smell of lavender and lemon is not only subtle but a nice change from traditional air fresheners. Once the candle completely evaporates, you have the option to purchase refills.

It is important to support local businesses but also just as important, Michelle is literally our neighbor. It’s also important to understand why you support local businesses, its not about buying stuff off of Amazon or Walmart, you can totally do that but keeping local businesses afloat are the types of connections you make to help strengthen a community. Its also worth reposting our interview with her that we featured earlier this Summer. If you’re looking for a gift for the family, start with the Medford Soap company, there is something there for everyone!

Join us as Gloria, Rowan and I spoke about the benefits of memberships, bookclubs and the number of books left in your life! This is the second take of the initial podcast. We also promote the resources that the Friends of the Medford Public Library assist and the money raised through the book and bake sale go to fund these outstanding programs and resources. Among those were museum passes. Two weeks ago I made a trip over to the Decordova museum in Lincoln. If you’ve never been, you should definitely check it out! I took a few photos posted below. While the main building is closed due to renovation, the campus and gift shop are open Tuesday thru Sundays. Monday of course they are closed.

  • As we head into the holiday seasons, we are taking some time off to re-energize for the upcoming year. We have a lot of exciting things on tap. We will post those items once we have some confirmations and the paths forward. We actually get to focus on the other aspects that make the City of Medford exciting. Among the items we’re working on. Website redesign. It has served us well in a sort of blog platform, however, we’re ready to broaden our scope. There will still be a political page for those to inform themselves of the goings on in Medford. We will also be featuring more interviews with not only residents of Medford but the visitors as well, whether they are touring with a band playing at Deep Cuts/American Beer Hall or even at the Chevalier, we’ll have some exciting guests!

While we are a communications platform, we will also be a resource page for folks looking for help. Whether its letting folks know that there is a social worker on sight at the Medford Public Library on Wednesdays (please check their events calendar – https://medfordlibrary.org/events/) or if you need more help, there are the fine folks like Jason Stone at Connect Medford, they work under the umbrella of the Medford Health dept. You can find more information about them here – https://www.medfordma.org/departments/health-department/office-prevention-outreach/medford-connects-community-engagement-team If you or someone you know needs help, this is a start. Of course for our more senior citizens there is always Pam Kelly’s group at the Council on Aging – https://www.medfordma.org/departments/council-on-aging/social-services Its at this time of year many people are struggling to make ends meet and there is some help out there so please spread the word.

  • Monday evening, the Friends of the Medford Public Library will be recording their next podcast. Look for that later this week. We speak with Gloria (one of the board members) and she’ll discuss the perks of memberships. We will also have Rowan to speak to us about the book club which she runs. We will also discuss Bruce’s visit to the Decordova in Lincoln. Yes, the library has free passes to this museum and many more. If you’re looking for something to do, check out the Libraries list of museum passes – https://medfordlibrary.assabetinteractive.com/museum-passes/by-museum/

Have you ever wanted to learn how to draw? Well the ACM (Arts Collaborative Medford) has you covered. They have a weekly session on Wednesdays called – Live Figure Drawing Session. With a nominal fee of $15 dollars, pursue those drawing skills that you’ve always wanted to do but never had the time. More info can be found here – https://artscollabmedford.org/eventscalendar#!event/2025/11/19/live-figure-drawing-sessions

ATTENTION SENIORS! If you or someone you know is looking for things to do for seniors please check out the newly released newsletter. The city website has also been updated and you can check that our here – https://www.medfordma.org/departments/council-on-aging/
